The Divine Comedy è un gruppo nordirlandese formato nel 1989 dal cantautore Neil Hannon.

Il gruppo debutta nel 1898 con l'album "Fanfare for the Comic Muse", seguito poi da "Liberation" e "Promenade". Nel 1996 il gruppo rilascia l'album "Casanova", il terzo album prodotto da Darren Allison e Neil Hannonil e primo grande successo che li porta all'apice del loro successo commerciale. L'anno successivo è la volta di "A Short Album About Love", album registrato dal vivo durante una prova audio e rilasciato il giorno di San Valentino.

Nel 2001 viene pubblicato "Regeneration", altro album di grande successo dei The Divine Comedy, seguito poi da "Absent Friends". Proprio con quest'ultimo album il gruppo sembra trovare un equilibrio tra il suono a tratti serio dei lavori successivi e il tono più leggero delle uscite più popolari.

Il 31 maggio 2010, i The Divine Comedy pubblicano il loro decimo album intitolato "Bang Goes the Knighthood" per la DC Records. L'album, raggiungendo la posizione numero 20 nella prima settimana di uscita, diventa il loro album con la posizione più alta in classifica dai tempi di "Regeneration".

Ad oggi i lavori più recenti del gruppo sono gli album "Foreverland" e "Office Politics", pubblicati rispettivamente nel 2016 e nel 2019. A settembre 2025 i The Divine Comedy torneranno con "Rainy Sunday Afternoon", il loro tredicesimo album.
