I Jethro Tull apparvero per la prima volta con questo nome nel 1968 nel famoso Marquee Club di Londra e da lì riuscirono a creare immediatamente un largo seguito, suonando su e già per l’Inghilterra. Il vero successo - anche un po’ a sorpresa - arrivò al Sunbury Jazz e al Blues Festival nell’estate del 1968. I Jethro Tull registrarono e pubblicarono il loro primo album, This Was, con la formazione originale con Anderson, Cornick, Bunker e Abrahams. Dopo la sostituzione di Mick Abrahams con Martin Barre, circa altri 30 musicisti si sono avvicendati nelle fila dei Jethro Tull, marchio che sopravvive fino ad oggi e dura nel tempo: Ian Anderson si esibisce con la band in genere per circa un centinaio di spettacoli ogni anno in tutto il mondo.
