La band nasce a Glasgow nel 1996 ed è composta da Stuart Murdoch (voce, chitarra e tastiere), Stevie Jackson (chitarra e voce), Sarah Martin (violino, voce, chitarra e tastiera), Mick Cooke (tromba, chitarra, basso e percussioni), Bobby Kildea (chitarra e basso), Richard Coldburn (batteria e percussioni) e Dave McGowan (basso, tastiere e chitarra).

Il nome del gruppo è tratto dal famoso libro per bambini Belle e Sebastien della scrittrice francese Cècile Aubry.

La carriera dei Belle & Sebastian inizia nel 1996 quando pubblicano il disco di debutto autoprodotto Tigermilk che scatena un passaparola generale nella cittadina universitaria. Tra i dischi più importanti della band ricordiamo The Boy With The Arab Strap del 1998 pubblicato con l’etichetta Matador Records (Cat Power, Queens of The Stone Age, Sonic Youth) ed entrato nella classifica dei 20 album più venduti nel Regno Unito, Dear Catastrophe Waitress del 2003 nominato ai Mercury Prize del 2004 e The Life Pursuit del 2006 certificato disco d’argento nel Regno Unito.
