I The Wombats si sono formati nel 2003 al Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts grazie all’incontro di Matthew Murphy (voce, chitarra e tastiere), Dan Haggis (batteria) e Tord Øverland-Knudsen (basso).

I The Wombats raggiungono la fama con il brano Backfire at The Disco, entrato nella top 50 dei singoli più ascoltati nel Regno Unito, che viene seguito dal loro album di debutto The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation nel 2007.

Nel 2011 il gruppo pubblica l’album The Wombats Proudly Proudly Presents: This Modern Glitch prodotto da Eric Valentine (Queens of The Stone Age). L’album include I brani Anti-D, Jump Into The Fog e la hit Techno Fan.

I The Wombats hanno pubblicato inoltre gli album Glitterbug del 2013, certificato Disco D’argento nel Regno Unito grazie a brani come Greek Tragedy (il cui remix di Oliver Nelson è stato certificato oro negli USA) e Pink Lemonade, e Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life nel 2017.

Nel 2022 i The Wombats torneranno con il nuovo album Fix Yourself, Not The World da cui sono stati estratti i singoli Method To The Madness, che ha raggiunto la UK Top 3, e If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You presentato al Reading Festival.
