The Skatalites are a legendary band that has been active for almost 60 years with a musical history that speaks for itself.
If it were not for the Skatalites we could not be talking about ska music as we know it today. Founded back in 1963 as a true "all star band" they are considered the inventors of the first true Jamaican sound, called precisely ska a mix of different musical styles, including Jamaican chin, calypso, rhythm and blues and jazz.
In 1964, they released their first album, Ska Authentic , and a few months later produced their most famous single, Guns of Navarone, which remains to this day the best-selling ska song in music history. In addition, the Skatalites accompanied some of the biggest Jamaican artists of the era, such as Toots and The Maytals, Prince Buster, and The Wailing Wailers with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer
Over the years, the lineup has undergone many changes (the only remaining founding member is singer Doreen Shaffer), but this has not affected the group's vibrancy and energy. They are one of the longest-running lineups in contemporary music history and still demonstrate the energy and passion that brought them success.
The Skatalites' music undoubtedly represents Jamaican dub, rock, and ska in an enduring way. Since the 1960s, their sound has influenced several generations of artists. Historical bands such as The Clash, The Specials, and The Police, as well as more recent formations such as No Doubt and Sublime, cannot deny the debt they owe to The Skatalites.
