About
Stefano Massini is an Italian writer, playwright and television personality.
In 2001 he began his career as a volunteer assistant to Luca Ronconi at Piccolo Teatro di Milano, one of Italy's leading theaters, where he collaborated with prestigious directors and playwrights, from whom he was stimulated to devote himself to writing new texts. He began experimenting with stage writing and in 2005 won the Tondelli Prize for the original play “L'odore assordante del bianco”.
In 2013 he presented “Lehman Trilogy”, a play later translated into 15 languages, thanks to which he achieved international success. Thanks precisely to the play, which was performed on stages around the world, in 2022 Massini won five Tony Awards, becoming the first Italian author to win the U.S. prize.
In 2013 he published “7 Minutes”. The play debuted in 2014 directed by Alessandro Gassmann, while in 2016 it became a film directed by Michele Placido and won the 2017 Nastri d'Argento Special Award. Also in 2016, Massini published the novel “Qualcosa sui Lehman”, the unabridged version from which the play was adapted, winning the Super Mondello, Campiello Selezione Giuria, De Sica Prize, Giusti Prize and Fiesole Prize.
In 2020, he began collaborating with Repubblica.it on the “Parole in corso” column and, also in the same year, he co-hosted with Andrea Delogu, from Rome's Teatro Sistina in prime time on Rai 3, the program “Ricomincio da Raitre”, dedicated to the difficulties of the entertainment world during the COVID-19 pandemic.
More recently, in February 2024, he is a guest on the third night of the Sanremo Festival, together with Paolo Jannacci, with whom he performs the unreleased song entitled "L'uomo nel lampo". As of January 11, 2025, Stefano Massini is the new artistic director of the National Theater of Tuscany.
To date in his career Stefano Massini counts more than thirty productions and plays and twenty-three published works, as well as numerous awards in both theater and literature.
