Public Enemy are an American hip hop group famous for their political themes in their lyrics, the criticism of the mass media and the attention to the African-American community.
From the early years the group had a strong impact on other hip hop groups and laid the foundations for various derived musical genres such as hardcore hip hop and political hip hop.
They released their first album, "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" in 1987. The album was then included on the Rolling Stone’s 500 Best Albums list.
It’s with their second album, "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" (ranked 15th on the "Rolling Stone’s 500 Best Albums list" in 2020), that the group creates its unmistakable style composed of common sounds mixed together to form the basis of the songs.
In the following years the group was included on the list of "The Immortals" of Rolling Stone (2005) and in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2013).
