About

A free artist, unconventional and truly independent, José Manuel Arturo Tomás Chao Ortega was born in Paris to a Galician father and a Basque mother fleeing Franco’s dictatorship. He spent his childhood breathing art, freedom and human rights. Already with Mano Negra he leaves his mark in the world of music: he sings in French, English and Spanish, blends different cultures and styles ranging from reggae to rock, from rap to Iberian music.

The worldwide success comes in 1998 with the solo debut, "Clandestino", of which human rights, flight and civil and social commitment are pillars, while the sounds are dominated by South American and African rhythms for that overwhelming and original mix of sound that has allowed "Clandestino" to become a true classic of contemporary popular music.

Manu Chao is now a musical and cultural icon, a world citizen who inspires generations.
