About

Fatoumata Diawara is a talented Malian singer-songwriter, born in 1982 and currently residing in France.

Her artistic versatility ranges from theatrical and cinematic performances to finding her true calling in music.

Starting as a theater and film actress, she honed her skills participating in productions such as "Genesis" (1999), "Sia, The Python's Dream" (2001), and "Timbuktu" (2014). However, it's in music where she found her full potential.

Her music career has seen the release of three studio albums, starting with her acclaimed debut "Fatou" in 2011. Her music is a unique fusion of the Wassoulou traditions of southern Mali with international influences, blending engaging melodies with meaningful lyrics.

A distinctive aspect of her career is her pioneering role as the first female electric solo guitarist from Mali, showcasing her eclecticism and innovation in her country's music scene.

Fatoumata Diawara has collaborated with a wide range of both Malian and international artists, including Cheick Tidiane Seck, Oumou Sangaré, AfroCubism, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou. She has taken her music worldwide, performing in iconic venues such as the Glastonbury Festival and the Clinton Global Initiative.

Over the years, she has continued to expand her artistic repertoire, participating in multimedia projects such as the "30 Songs / 30 Days" campaign in support of Half the Sky and collaborating with the Gorillaz on their 2020 single "Désolé".

Her latest album, "Maliba", released in 2022, has received widespread acclaim for its significant contribution to cultural preservation, as it was created as the soundtrack to a project digitizing ancient manuscripts preserved in Timbuktu.

Fatoumata Diawara remains a prominent figure in contemporary African music, celebrated not only for her artistic talent but also for her dedication to promoting the culture and tradition of Mali through her art.
